Marie Jung: Fräulein Else
Luxembourgish and Swiss actress Marie Jung presents a staged reading of the novella Fräulein Else by Arthur Schnitzler, one of the most important authors of Viennese Modernism. This extraordinary text from 1924, written in the form of a stream of consciousness, is among the most radical psychological portraits of its time and retains its powerful impact to this day.
At its heart is the young Else, who tries to save her father from a public scandal. The condition she must accept, however, deeply infringes upon her own dignity. What appears outwardly to be a social situation develops inwardly into a dramatic torrent of thoughts, feelings, and images, in which reality and dream merge. Between the longing for escape and growing helplessness, an inner conflict unfolds, culminating in a tragic climax.
At the intersection of literature and theater, Marie Jung's interpretation creates a compressed, intense space in which language and voice carry the entire tension of the text. The staged reading explores themes such as power, dependency, societal double standards, and the objectification of the female body, highlighting their unsettling relevance today.
The staged reading will take place on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. in the hall of the Austrian Cultural Forum (Jungmannovo nám. 18, Prague 1).
In German only.
