Luxembourg inventor Edouard Legille passed away

Published Friday February 20 2015

We are deeply saddened to announce that Edouard Legille, former CEO of Paul Wurth and inventor of the Paul Wurth Bell Less Top, passed away on 28 January 2015, at the age of 89.

The former Chief Executive Officer (1971-1986) and Chairman of the Board of the company Paul Wurth invented the blast furnace charging system without bell, also known as the “Bell Less Top” in 1969.

Lighter and more wear-resistant at high pressure, the Bell Less Top makes it both possible to build even larger furnaces and to operate at high pressure, which improves the efficiency of the iron making process. The duly patented innovation was a real break in the steel world.

Under Edouard Legille's leadership, Paul Wurth developed into a modern, internationally renowned engineering company.  During this period, he significantly strengthened the Luxembourg commercial relationships with countries such as China or Japan.

With the passing away of Edouard Legille, we have lost an outstanding engineer and great industrial pioneer.

Paul Wurth is also present in the Czech Republic, operating from Ostrava.
